Actually this is not a big restriction, as long as the film scanner is placed on the desktop. So a film adaptor has to be attached to the Coolscan 5 ED at all times, even when not in use. Nikon removed this creditable piece completely. Therefore, when the cover was closed, the scanner's interior was securely protected against dust.

The most striking modification compared to the predecessor attracted my attention on the front side of the scanner: the LS-40 had a sliding cover, which easily covered the interior of the scanner when no film adaptor was attached. While the Coolscan 4000 was standing on four rubber knobs, the new Coolscan 5000 is bordered by two rubber-like plastic attachments, so that it has a skid-proof stand on the desktop both horizontally and vertically. The altered stands immediately catch one's eye though. The dimensions and the form are the same as its predecessor's.

When unpacking the scanners it became already clear that Nikon has rationalised: two identical boxes with different labelling, same wrapping and packaging inside, the same film adaptor, same connection cable, same software and even the same user guide - only the scanners are different, but not formally.

I have ordered my Coolscan V and Super Coolscan 5000 the same day and I also received them at the same day. Because both scanners are formally almost identical, some pictures on this page derive from my review of its big brother Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED. My following review will show that Nikon strongly saved costs, which is not obvious at first glance though.Īs described below Nikon launched two new scanners at the same time: the Nikon Coolscan V ED and the Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED. Does this mean higher performance for lower prices? Not really. The biggest surprise though was a radical price reduction of about 20% compared to its predecessor. By means of specifications it was soon clear that the little Nikon progressed heavily. In October 2003 Nikon surprised the filmscanner community with the successor of the well proven Nikon Coolscan IV ED. However Nikon was front-runner concerning the prices as well. Hope it works out for you, I found the 9000 to be the answer to my scanning needs. We still have Nikon film scanners and Nikon accessories available in our film scanner shop.īut why should Nikon launch a new range? After all Nikon was indisputably leading the market in all classes concerning quality and possibilities with the LS-40, Super Coolscan 4000 and the Super Coolscan 9000. Lastly, go to the Nikon 8000/9000 group on yahoo groups it has some people that can help out. I would also suggest either the Glass film holder or one of the liquid mount holders to replace the standard holder if you are having problems with film flatness. It will help you to get the most out of the scanner. Take a look at for a tutorial on the Nikon 4000, 90% of which is applicable to the 9000. Vuescan is a good product, I just do not use it for the 9000. IMO Vuescan is selected by people because they are more comfortable with its workflow, not because it can get better results. I liked Vuescan for the 3200, but now I like NikonScan.

With the 9000 I found NikonScan to be very user friendly and very capable. I had to use Vuescan with my old Epson 3200 to get any decent results, none of which I have anymore because they were not very good at all. Ended up getting the glass carrier, and it's a lot easier to use. When I first got my 9000 I was very frustrated with the film holder for MF. But how does Viewscan handle batch preview scans?

Thanks ok, because Photoshop CS2 often causes the Nikon software to close after a batch scan and before images are saved to a file. I see that the only option in Vuescan is to send completed scans to a file. In the Nikon software, each preview (and each scan in a batch not automatically saved in a file) is in its own little window on the screen when the batch is complete. Perhaps you can tell me where Vuescan puts batch previews. The cleaning functions only work on C-41 processed film. I bought the program because I thought it might help me with the quality of some of my black and white scans. I don't care much about the cleaning feature. This is much more easily done using the Nikon software. I'll have to look at the negs on the light table and remember which frames are in a particular location in the 12-frame negative holder. I can live without thumbnails-although it makes it more time-consuming to quickly determine which frames are total losers and not even worth a preview scan. I can live with VueScan being a stand-alone program.
